Effect of Health Teaching sessions on Pregnant Women’s Knowledge and Health Behaviour Regarding Urinary Tract Infection

Abstract
Introduction: Teaching regarding self-care during pregnancy along with the useful interventions are helpful for treating urinary tract infections (UTI).Objective: This study examines change in health behavoir and knowledge among UTI pregnant women following three months of teaching sessions. Method: This quasi-experimental study was carried out on gestational women visiting the outpatient ante-natal clinic at Prince Sultan Military Medical City. A total of 377 gestational women were recruited in the study through purposive sampling technique. A structured interview questionnaire was answered by both groups (control, intervention), prior to the intervention and 12 weeks after health teaching sessions were conducted by the researcher. The questionnaire consisted of three parts to assess socio-demographic data, knowledge about of UTI and health behaviours evaluation. Results: The mean age was 28.7 ± 4.8 in intervention group.The association between enrolled gestational women knowledge related to UTI infection after implementation of teaching sessions found a significant difference in level of knowledge in both intervention and control group. After the teaching sessions, the percentage of women with fair (61.54%) and good (35.90%) knowledge have been increased , health behaviours regarding UTI 35.90% of study group had very good behavior compared to 23.68% before intervention. The findings showed that health teaching session was effective in promotion of the knowledge, and health behaviors of pregnant women with UTI. Conclusion: Based on the result, health teaching sessions had effects on the knowledge, and their health behaviors through empowering women to change their lifestyle & health seeking behavior.
