Abstract
Background: In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the most common procedure of assisted reproductive technologies worldwide. Promoting the health of women undertaking IVF is an important goal for global reproductive health. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effect of collaborative infertility counseling on coping strategies and marital satisfaction among women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization. Design: A non-blinded randomized controlled trial, pre/post-test with follow-ups. Setting: This study was conducted at the Fertility Care Center at Mansoura University Hospitals, Mansoura City, Egypt. Subjects: This study included 136 infertile women who were eligible to carry out the IVF procedure randomly assigned to intervention and control groups (68 per group). Tools: A structured interview questionnaire, Ways of Coping-Revised (WOC-R) questionnaire, and Marital Satisfaction Index (MSI). Results: The mean score of ways of coping and marital satisfaction increased significantly (p < 0.001) post-intervention and at follow-ups. Moreover, the ways of coping were correlated significantly and positively with the marital satisfaction post-intervention, at 1-month, and 2-month follow-ups (r=0.358, 0.290, and 0.270 respectively, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Collaborative infertility counseling is one of the effective methods to improve coping strategies and marital satisfaction among women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization. There was a highly statistically significant improvement in scores of ways of coping and marital satisfaction in the intervention group compared the to control group post-intervention. Recommendations: Providing collaborative counseling should be an integral part of nursing care for women undergoing IVF to foster positive adaptation and increase marital satisfaction.
