Evaluating the extent to which nurses apply infection prevention and control guidelines for patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscope

Abstract

Background:  Nurses are key members of the healthcare team in preventing patient infections; thus, maintaining a high level of awareness and strict adherence to infection control measures is essential. Aim: To evaluate the extent to which nurses apply infection prevention and control guidelines for patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscope. Design: Descriptive research design. Setting and Sample: The study was conducted among a convenience sample of all available nurses (30) who were giving care for patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscope in endoscopy unit at Al Rajhi Hospital- Assiut University. Results: Revealed that the mean age of studied nurses was 37.3 ± 6.10 years with a mean experience duration of 10.16±3.18 years. (60%, 93%) resp. of nurses demonstrated unsatisfactory levels of knowledge and practice regarding infection prevention and control in gastrointestinal endoscope. Age was significantly associated with knowledge, with older participants showing better knowledge, while years of experience had no impact. In contrast, neither age nor experience influenced practice levels, Conclusion: The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions and training programs to enhance nurses' competencies in infection prevention and control, ensuring adherence to guidelines and improved patient outcomes. Recommendation: Regular training, standardized protocols, periodic evaluations, advanced educational opportunities, and a supportive work environment are recommended to enhance nurses’ knowledge and practices concerning infection prevention and control in gastrointestinal endoscope.
