Relation of Perceived Family Social Support and Self-care Behaviors among elderly with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease  is prevalent, avoidable, and treatable condition that is characterized by ongoing respiratory symptoms and restricted airflow that is due to abnormalities of the airways and alveoli, which usually caused by prolonged exposure to harmful particles or gases.  Aim: To determine the relation between perceived family social support and self-care behaviors of elders with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease  . Research design: Descriptive research design was used in this study .Sample: (275) elderly patients. Setting: The study was carried out in outpatient chest clinic at Al-Azhar university hospital. Tools: Tool (I) A structured interview questionnaire and Tool (II) questions to assess knowledge about Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , Tool (III): Self-Care Behaviors Questionnaire for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Patients, and Tool (IV): Perceived family Support Scale for elderly. Results: Significant Positive correlation for the relationship between Self-Care Behaviors for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease  Patients and Perceived family Support for elderly. Conclusion: There was a relationship between self-care behaviors and the level of knowledge among elderly Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Recommendations: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients should participate in a continuous self-care behavior program to improve their knowledge, behaviors, and practices to prevent Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complications.
