Lecturer of Psychiatric- Mental Health Nursing-Faculty of Nursing, Ain Sham University, Egypt.
Abstract
Professional self-concept is the individual’s perception of own self as a professional person. Stress is considered a common phenomenon in nursing due to the nature of clinical environments. However, the relationship between these two variables is unclear in the review of the literature. Accordingly, this study was aiming to assess the relationship between professional self-esteem and job stress among psychiatric nurses working at El- Abbassiya Psychiatric Hospital which is affiliated to the General Secretariat of Mental Health and Ministry of Health, Cairo, Egypt. Subjects of the study included 220 nurses of both sexes. Tools of data collection were Aricak’s Professional Self-Esteem Scale and Psychiatric Nurses' Job Stress Scale (PNJSS) and Socio demographic sheet was used as the first part of the first tool (Aricak’s Professional Self-Esteem Scale). The results indicated that, there was no significant relation between professional self-esteem and job stress among nurses. The researchers recommended future interventions programs to promote professional self-esteem among psychiatric nurses.
